Gleam of Wind was created as part of the Christmas illuminations displayed at Showa Memorial Park, Tachikawa, in 2016. Takatoku aimed to design an installation that would seamlessly blend with the natural surroundings of the park, evoking a quiet, serene atmosphere. Drawing inspiration from the winter landscape, where cold air makes one's vision misty and blurred, Takatoku sought to replicate that sensation through the soft, diffused glow of the light spheres. The installation consists of glass wind chimes, sandblasted to create a frosted texture, which were fitted with flexible LED lights inside. The frosted surface blurs the light, producing a faint, gentle glow that mirrors the out-of-focus effect Takatoku experienced when walking through snowy landscapes. These light spheres, resembling traditional Japanese wind-bells, sway gently in the wind, though their tongues were silenced by the placement of the LEDs to suit the winter and memorial context of the park. This concept reflects the nature of light that requires the movement of wind to truly come to life, evoking the imagery of a sail filled with wind, gently guiding the illumination.
