Takatoku NISHI | Phenomena Architect / Ph.D.
Feeling a deep fascination with the ever-changing natural scenery, Nishi strives to recreate the optical phenomena embedded within these landscapes through innovative use of materials and structures, thereby crafting new spaces of light. His works invite viewers to experience the beauty shaped by natural forces by integrating knowledge from optics, meteorology, and mechanics, while skillfully incorporating geometric forms and natural elements such as sunlight and wind. Moreover, Nishi places significant emphasis on the unique atmosphere his works exude—an element that fosters harmony between the creation and its environment. He believes this atmosphere is integral to defining the characteristics of the space. Through his spatial creations, Nishi seeks to bring the power and beauty of natural forces closer to the viewer, offering a renewed appreciation of their magnificence. After earning a Ph.D. in Design from the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts, Nishi has navigated various twists and turns and is currently pursuing a second doctorate in the Department of Architecture at the same university.
